Military spending boosts the GDP

Military spending boosts the GDP. GDP is Government spending + Private Consumption + Gross Investment + Exports - Imports.

 By increasing military spending, you are increasing government spending, and thus increasing the GDP. If Military spending was cut, the GDP fall. The reason people want to see a reduction in military spending has nothing to do with GDP. It has to do with debt. Because all spending to boost the GDP leads to debt. The government doesnt have the money to increase military spending. Thus it must borrow money in order to increase military spending. The private sector doesnt have the money to boost the private spending, thus it needs to borrow money to boost the private spending.

 So if the economy is at 10 dollars. And the goal is to increase the economy by 10 percent. Then an additional 1 dollar needs to be borrowed to bring the GDP to 11 dollars thus leading to a ten percent increase in GDP. And at the same time adding an additional dollar to the nation's debt. In short, liquidating the military would not help improve the national economy, but it would alleviate the national debt. This is because the country doesnt have the money pay for the military. It doesnt even have the money to pay for civilian goods and services. This deficit must be paid for by borrowing.

  The only concern China has is geopolitics. Internal stability is a non-issue. There is so much job creation in the economy that the military is having a hard time crowding out the civilian sector for new recruits. Who needs internal security when you have military security. You build weapons to shoot at foreigners not at your own. Who ever comes into power will be able to inherit those weapons to propagate a strong China. That is the kind legacy that you want to pass on.

Nuclear weapons are cheaper to maintain than a standing army

  Soldiers need constant upkeep. Annual salaries, benefits, insurance policies, pensions, etc. ICBMs dont ask for raises, they dont have general strikes, they dont get tired, or get paid over time. Doesnt require that many technicians and engineers to keep and maintain a nuclear stockpile. Its like automation. Its cheaper to have a self automated factory than an army of factory workers in the long run. The benefits of a nuclear stockpile far exceed the cost. One billion RMB worth of ICBMs has more military effectiveness than one billion RMB worth of type 95s, or one billion RMB worth of Type 99s, or one billion RMB worth of J20s.

Libya can still win

  Qaddafi needs to destroy rebel strongholds and makes sure they are defeated. Without western troops on the ground, it would be difficult for them to make any gains. The west is hoping that rebel forces can make the gains themselves. But this then becomes like the Bay of Pigs where the rebels lack the military power and the resolve to do any of this. They will get crushed whenever they get confronted by real Libyan soldiers. Its not simply that the rebels lack armor. Support is low, and so is training.

  But the west still wont win.

  A single tsar bomb was over 60 megatons. If anything, the nuclear arsenal should be between 200 to 300 gigatons.

  The sudden act of western aggression is most likely due to fear that the rebels would soon be overrun. Its difficult to remove Gaddafi relying simply on rebel forces alone. They simply dont have the support and manpower needed for it. The man has no legitimacy when he has been effectively removed by his own people. Western aggression hardly makes that act of rebellion appear genuine. Thus aggression in the form of missile and air strikes is simply not enough. There needs to be some kind of physical force on the ground to remove him. But obama is already unpopular. His domestic policies are a failure and his foreign policies have no support except from the usual suspects. Thus the result is just blind aggression but far too limited to produce results.

 There is a huge list of turbojet and turbofan engines that were produced by China that were basically knockoffs of Soviet counterparts and domestically designed engines that were produced in China. Japan does not have a history of producing aircraft engines whether they be knockoffs or indigenous. 

 Japan and israel are in the exact same boat. None of these countries even manufacture and deploy domestic aircrafts or aircraft engines. The entire israeli airfleet is just american aircrafts with israeli names attached to them.

  Of course its going to be difficult for Japan. First, they have to develop a domestically designed airframe, and then they have to manufacture a domestically designed turbofan engine. Both of which they have little experience in doing. In then end, they are still going to have to use a foreign engine to power their airframe. And use foreign weapon systems and avionics as well. Alecto, you need to try to stop insulting people with your stupidity and recognize that you are simply wrong. The idea that Japan can just produce a stealth airframe and a domestic turbofan to compliment is just not going to happen. Not anymore likely that israel will ever have an actual israeli airforce. In both cases of israel and Japan, their airforce's are so foreign, they might as well just rename their airforces' usaf. Without american airframes and american propulsion systems, israel would return to the bronze age. Japan would be installing propellers on f16s.

China and Japan just are not equals in military aviation

  China has a rich and deep history of military aviation projects. From the Soviet Mig knockoffs to the current indigenous aircrafts of today. Chinese have manufactured J6s J7s and J11s which are Soviet designed military aircrafts. Domestically, China has designed and manufactured Q5s, J8s, JH7As, J10s, and J20s. So there is a rich history of design theory and aviation manufacturing. Japan's airforce simply consists of f16s and f15s. Which are both american designed and manufactured aircrafts. The f2 which is the closest thing Japan has to an indigenous aircraft is 50 percent made and designed in the united states. Its turbofan engine is also designed and made in the us. The two simply are not equals.

  Yes, Japan does have a rich commercial and consumer friendly industry. But that has little to do with military aviation. Otherwise, the two family cars I drive would be a Volga and a GM. Instead, the only two cars I have ever owned were both Toyotas. A Previa and a Camry.

  With the J20, China has already caught up. The only fighter aircraft the us could hide behind was the f22 under the claim of stealth. Well, China has stealth too.

  Japan is no slouch, China looks to Japan in regards to bullet train technology, automobiles, and consumer electronics. But it doesnt look to Japan in regards to military aviation and weapon systems. That would be a step backwards. Claiming Japan will be able to the same in some future uncertain date is not the same as saying Japan will catch up to China. By then, China would have already moved on to something else. Tactical nuclear warheads being dropped from stealth satellites in outer space.

  China isnt the second largest economy in the world. Its the world's largest economy. And there isnt backward mobility so people dont perceive de-evolution. People are not losing something that they previously had, they are gaining something they didnt previously have. If they working to produce a good or service that they themselves are not consuming, then they are only made worse off from the activity. However, if they are working to produce a good or service that they themselves are consuming, then they are made better off from the activity. If they are not working to produce a good or service that they are consuming, they are double better off from the activity. China is the best fed country in Asia. No country in Asia eats more meat per capita and has more obese children than the Chinese. Which is also why Japan and Korea imports their food from China.

  In any case, its not as if producing goods for the rest of the world improves your standard of living. When the world is your vassal and they send tribute to you every year. That is what improves your standard of living. 

Nukes are designed to be used, thats why you have them

  Whether the first shot is tactical or apocalyptic. The idea is to use them in a military confrontation. In a battle between two men, someone will eventually draw their sword. A conventional option was never really an option. The J20, J11, J10 none of them can even reach the united states. They would all crash into the Pacific on its way there. Its just an aircraft, it will never make it. The only thing that can reach the united states are ballistic missiles, fired over the arctic. Even if it started out as a conventional fight, you have to be wary of the idea that your opponent will eventually try to draw something lethal.

Regional Power would be short sighted

  While social and infrastructure spending is great. And having between 6000 and 10,000 km worth of speed rail sets a global record.
